Cyber Security Awareness Month
Cyber attacks are on the rise, and it has never been more important for businesses, public entities and individuals to do whatever they can to find ways to proactively protect and prevent potential cyber events.
The MEL is a leader in the development of cyber security education and cyber risk management programs for public entities in New Jersey and is proud to once again serve as a Champion for Cybersecurity Awareness Month (October 1-31).
This year’s theme is “It’s easy to stay safe online,” and key fundamental cybersecurity best practices will be highlighted:
- PHISHING: Recognizing and reporting phishing – still one of the primary threat actions used by cybercriminals today. Click here for a tip sheet.
- PASSWORDS: Understanding the benefits of using a password manager and dispelling existing myths around password manager security and ease of use. Click here for a tip sheet.
- MFA: Enabling multi-factor authentication on personal devices and business networks. Click here for a tip sheet.
- UPDATES: Installing updates on a regular basis and turning on automated updates. Click here for a tip sheet.
Throughout the month, the MEL Cyber Task Force will share tips, best practices and important links to resources to increase awareness about cybersecurity and to help you stay safer and more secure online. We will distribute these tips weekly through the NJ MEL App (which is free to download) and post them on the staging-njmel.kinsta.cloud website under Cyber Risk Control on the “Resources” page.
Cyber Security Awareness Month is co-led by the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
