Watch those Crush Zones when readying snow plows
As Public Works Departments begin in earnest to remove their snow plows from their summer storage locations, mechanics should stay alert to the many crush zones present in this operation. These include:
- Attaching hoists and rigging to the plow as it rests in the storage rack or on the ground
- the moving lift vehicle that moves and lowers the plow to its inspection location
- maneuvering the plow for inspections, maintenance and repairs
- Moving the snow plow to its winter ready storage location
Mechanics can protect themselves by wearing gloves and protective-toed boots, having clear hand signals and a plan of movement with the lift vehicle driver, and a good supply of jack stands and cribbing immediately available.
